George Michael To Be Inducted Into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame
The late George Michael, an iconic British singer-songwriter and LGBTQIA+ icon, will be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 2023, reports Advocate.
The announcement came as a delight to many of Michael’s fans, who have long been advocating for his recognition in the prestigious music institution.
Recognition for George Michael is long overdue
George Michael rose to fame in the 1980s as a member of the duo Wham!, producing hit singles such as Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go and Careless Whisper. He later pursued a successful solo career, releasing chart-topping albums such as Faith and Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1.
In their announcement of Michael’s induction to the Hall Of Fame, the organisers say that Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 is a “masterpiece” that “alludes to Michael’s struggle as a closeted gay man during the height of the AIDS epidemic,” reports Advocate.
Aside from his musical achievements, George Michael was also an outspoken advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights and a prominent figure in the community. He publicly came out as gay in 1998 and dedicated his song Outside to the LGBTQIA+ community, which became a symbol of pride and acceptance.
“George Michael possessed extraordinary talent as a songwriter, vocalist, and producer,” said the Hall Of Fame in a statement. “His influence on pop music and culture is undeniable, and his advocacy for LGBTQIA+ rights and representation is equally commendable. We are proud to induct him into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 2023.”
The induction ceremony is set to take place Friday, November 3rd at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Along with George Michael, other notable artists to be inducted in the class of 2023 include Foo Fighters, Mary J Blige and JAY-Z.
