9 Gay Enemies-To-Lovers Movies (And Where to Stream Them)

10 Dance (Episcop), Red, White & Royal Blue (Amazon Prime) and In from the Side (Take A Seat Pictures)

Two men who cannot stand each other, right up until they cannot keep their hands off each other. That is the enemies-to-lovers formula, and it might be the most satisfying setup in queer romance.

Here are nine gay enemies-to-lovers movies that do the slow burn properly, from a closed-off farmer in Yorkshire to two ballroom champions who refuse to share a spotlight. Every one actually fits the trope, and every one is streaming somewhere right now.

One quick note before we start. Streaming homes shift and vary by country, so if a title is not showing where you are, check JustWatch for your region.

1. Red, White And Royal Blue (2023)

Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine in Red, White & Royal Blue (Amazon Prime).

The son of the US president and a British prince spend years trading insults in public before a very undiplomatic kiss changes everything. Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine sell the whole arc, from cold hostility to something much warmer. It is the most crowd-pleasing pick here, and the easiest to press play on tonight.

Where to watch: Prime Video.

2. Fire Island (2022)

Fire Island (Jeong Park/supplied)

Joel Kim Booster rebuilt Pride and Prejudice around a Fire Island summer, which makes this a rivals-to-lovers story by design. Noah cannot stand the aloof, wealthy Will, played by Conrad Ricamora, so of course that disdain turns into want. Sharp, funny and properly romantic.

Where to watch: Hulu in the United States. Elsewhere, check Disney+ or JustWatch.

3. God’s Own Country (2017)

Alec Secareanu and Josh O’Connor in God’s Own Country. (Shudder Films)

Francis Lee’s Yorkshire drama gave a lot of us our first Josh O’Connor fixation. His character Johnny is cold and cruel until Romanian worker Gheorghe, played by Alec Secăreanu, arrives and refuses to play along. The thaw between them is quiet and completely earned. It won the World Cinema directing award at Sundance, and you can see why.

Where to watch: Prime Video or Tubi, plus digital rental.

4. The Thing About Harry (2020)

Jake Borelli and Niko Terho in The Thing About Harry. (Full Paige Productions)

Two high school enemies get stuck sharing a car to a mutual friend’s party, and the ride slowly rewrites their history. Jake Borelli and Niko Terho give this real charm. It is one of the few sweet gay rom-coms that fully commits to the trope rather than just flirting with it.

Where to watch: Freeform and YouTube TV in the US. Availability is patchy elsewhere, so check JustWatch.

5. Eismayer (2022)

Gerhard Liebmann and Luka Dimic in Eismayer. (Golden Girls Filmproduktion)

Based on a true story, this Austrian military drama sets a closeted, iron-fisted drill sergeant against an openly gay recruit who will not be broken. The clash between Gerhard Liebmann and Luka Dimić becomes one of the more unexpected love stories on this list.

Where to watch: Tubi, or rent digitally.

6. In From The Side (2022)

Alexander King and Alexander Lincoln in In from the Side (Take A Seat Pictures)

Set inside a London gay rugby club, this British indie follows two men from different sides of the club, Mark (Alexander Lincoln) and Warren (Alexander King), who start an affair neither can afford. It leans more on forbidden tension than open warfare, but the rivalry is baked in.

Where to watch: Tubi and Prime Video, plus rental.

7. 10Dance (2023)

Keita Machida and Ryoma Takeuchi in 10 Dance (Episcop)

Two elite ballroom dancers, both named Shinya, are forced to train in each other’s disciplines and hate the arrangement at first. Ryoma Takeuchi and Keita Machida turn competitive irritation into slow, charged attraction. If you want the purest rivals-to-lovers structure of the bunch, this is it.

Where to watch: Netflix.

8. Mario (2018)

Aaron Altaras and Max Hubacher in Mario. (Triluna Film AG)

Two footballers at a Swiss club are thrown together while competing for the same striker spot, and the rivalry becomes a relationship they have to hide to protect their careers. Max Hubacher and Aaron Altaras make the pressure feel real. A grounded, sometimes tough watch.

Where to watch: Netflix, Prime Video or MUBI, depending on your region.

9. Free Fall (2013)

Max Riemelt and Hanno Koffler in Free Fall. (Kurhaus Production)

A settled police officer with a pregnant girlfriend meets a confident new colleague during a brutal training run, and the competitive edge between them tips into an affair that upends his careful life. Hanno Koffler and Max Riemelt are excellent. This is the heaviest pick, and the one that lingers longest.

Where to watch: Netflix, Prime Video, Tubi or Apple TV.

Every film on this list earns the label. Plenty of similar roundups pad the count with titles where the “enemies” part is wishful thinking. Want the most traditional rivalry to start with? Put on 10Dance or Red, White and Royal Blue. The rest pay you back for staying through the slow burn.
