From The Editor: The Real Heated Rivalry
Andrew Creagh on a sport-dominated issue: Heated Rivalry, Matthew Mitcham, and why gay pop stars seem to have disappeared from the charts.
This was not meant to be a sport-themed issue, but it’s hard to avoid everything Heated Rivalry-related at the moment, and why would you want to?
It’s sexy, it’ll make you laugh, cry and smile. The actors do an incredible job, the script moves along at a good pace, and the intimacy consultant was kept busy. Some people complained that the sex scenes weren’t explicit enough, but I felt it was obvious what was happening and from my (cough) limited experience, quite realistic.
We also have a story called The Real Heated Rivalry in this issue by Kade Matthews. It’s about actual LGBT ice hockey teams, and why Kade decided to join one. He says it saved his life, and it’s a very moving account. A recommended read.
Australia’s golden boy of Olympic gold medal fame, Matthew Mitcham, chats with us, too. He’s appearing in a new play, Afterglow, about a complicated modern gay relationship. I love seeing Matt on stage.
The pro-tennis world is getting a gentle shake-up by Brazilian João Reis da Silva and Swiss Mika Brunold. Both players have recently come out and are helping dismantle some tired old tennis taboos.

Our Straight Mate Luke Bateman is a former rugby league player, our cover model Zac Barrett is a physique competitor, and Blake Yelavich’s model, Iasonas, spills his protein shake all over himself. Whoops!
The non-sporty stuff this month includes interviews with the iconic Sandra Bernhard and the sexy Keiynan Lonsdale. We reveal what’s happening at the sauna, and try to work out why gay pop stars have suddenly disappeared from the charts!
Thanks for your recent feedback, too. Some of those appear on the Burnttoast page. Your comments are greatly valued.
