As Sydney WorldPride draws near, it’s time to make some hard choices about what to see during the Festival. To help you decide, DNA suggests some theatre production options for the serious theatre-goer.
We have already suggested three of the sexiest shows, for those who like it spicy, but if you’re looking for recommendations that lean towards the more cerebral, may we suggest…
HUBRIS AND HUMILIATION
Deeply romantic and achingly funny, Hubris And Humiliation is a production from Lewis Treston and directed by Dean Bryant that is sure to satisfy any gay Jane Austen fans. Think Pride And Prejudice, but switch regency era Britain for modern-day Australia and you have the premise of Hubris And Humiliation.
Innocent and naive Elliott is shipped from his hometown on the Sunshine Coast to his uncle’s mansion in Kirribilli to find a suitable (and wealthy) husband to save his family from disrepute. Elliott’s journey into the pumping gay dating scene inevitably results in many ludicrous situations that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats.
Hubris And Humiliation will be on at Sydney WorldPride from Friday, January 20 – Saturday, March 4. Tickets are available here.

CHOIR BOY
Premiering in Australia, Tarell Alvin McCraney’s Tony-Award winning play Choir Boy will be presented by Riverside’s National Theatre of Parramatta at Sydney WorldPride. A heart-wrenching coming-of-age tale, Choir Boy delves into the murky territory of race, identity, sexuality and the nexus of these ideologies.
This play follows a young gay man named Pharus who attends an elite school where he leads the choir. Pharus grapples with issues of identity and acceptance among the rigid environment he finds himself in and navigates his troubles through gospel music. Dino Dimitriadis and Zindzi Okenyo direct this Australian premiere with musical director Allen René Louis who weaves soul-stirring a cappella gospel hymns throughout the narrative to punctuate this stunning theatre production.
Choir Boy will be running at Sydney WorldPride from Tuesday, February 14 – Saturday, March 11. Tickets are available here.

DADDY
From the Koori Wiradjuri queer artist Joel Bray, a new electric performance is born that interrogates cravings and desire and the consequences. Daddy is created, choreographed and performed by Joel Bray who uses the medium of dance and theatre to convey powerful messages about Australian colonisation and the lasting insatiability of imperialism.
Joel Bray has daddy issues and his insatiable cravings for father figures always leave him wanting more. Joel’s cravings are getting out of hand. He’s looking to live the sweet life, yet the sugar hits of nostalgia and fantasy are all too short-lived, and behind it all there’s a need that can never be sated. The perspectives offered forth by Joel Bray’s Daddy will draw audiences in – both in a literal and philosophical way. Join Bray as he delivers his trademark performance style involving dance, conversation and audience interaction as he troubles the paradox of desire.
Daddy will be running at Sydney WorldPride on Thursday, February 23 with two shows on Friday, February 24. Tickets available here.
