First Trailer For “Fellow Travelers” Starring Matt Bomer And Jonathan Bailey

(YouTube/Paramount+)

For months now, anticipation has been building for the release of Fellow Travelers. With the official trailer dropping on October 4, we have had a closer look at the drama that will unfold in the upcoming eight-part series.

A tumultuous tale of love, secrets and paranoia

Oscar nominee Ron Nyswaner is bringing the tense gay love story, written by Thomas Mallon to the screen. Mallon’s 2007 novel Fellow Travelers is a sweeping gay love story that begins during the era of McCarthyism – a fraught political epoch punctuated by the “Red Scare” and homosexual demonisation.

This is where the story of Tim Laughlin (Jonathan Bailey) and Hawkins Fuller (Matt Bomer) kicks off. We will watch as these two characters survive the rampant paranoia of Washington during the Cold War and attempt to hold onto one another despite the world being against them.

We have seen teasers and first looks at the series but the official trailer reveals more depth to the story than we’ve seen previously. It begins with Hawkins, a charismatic yet stoic political figure being interrogated about his personal relationships. As the interview unfolds we catch glimpses of his wife, his job and his affair with Laughlin.

The Lavendar Scare was a moral panic that ran parallel to McCarthyism in which gay men and lesbians were deemed threats to national security. With this tense climate framing Fellow Travelers, the affair between our main characters is coloured with danger and secrecy.

With the release date of Saturday, October 28 coming up soon, the wait is almost over and expectations are high. Fellow Travelers will premiere on Showtime and is available for streaming on Paramount+.
