FBI And DHS Warn Of Potential Attacks On LGBTQIA+ Events During Pride Month
The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security have issued a joint warning about possible threats to LGBTQIA+ events and venues during the upcoming Pride Month next month. The announcement, released on May 10, aims to raise awareness of the potential targeting by foreign terrorist organizations or their supporters.

“Foreign terrorist organisations or supporters may seek to exploit increased gatherings associated with the upcoming June 2024 Pride Month,” the agencies stated, as reported by PBS. While no specific locations or threats were mentioned, the release emphasised that these groups have previously promoted anti-LGBTQIA+ rhetoric and targeted related events.
Remembering the Pulse Nightclub Tragedy
The agencies also noted that June 12 marks the eighth anniversary of the attack on Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida. This incident, which occurred during a Latin Night celebration, remains the deadliest attack on the LGBTQIA+ community in US history, claiming 49 lives and injuring 53 others. The gunman, Omar Mateen, pledged allegiance to the Islamic State before being killed by SWAT team members after a three-hour standoff.
Last year, three alleged Islamic State sympathizers were arrested in Vienna for attempting to attack a Pride event, further highlighting the ongoing threat to the LGBTQIA+ community.
The Pulse Nightclub tragedy continues to resonate within the LGBTQIA+ community.

In 2021, Richard Branson’s tribute to the victims by taking a Pride flag to space demonstrates the far-reaching impact of this horrific event.
“Somebody who lost a loved one at the [Pulse Orlando] massacre asked if I would do that. We also have many, many friends who are gay and I know people who lost friends there,” he told The Mail.

Staying Vigilant And Aware
The release advised the public to be vigilant for potential warning signs, such as violent threats made online or through mail, individuals attempting to photograph security equipment or access restricted areas, and suspicious persons trying to gather information about upcoming events and crowd sizes from venue staff.
As Pride Month approaches, the LGBTQIA+ community and allies must remain aware of potential risks while continuing to celebrate love, diversity, and equality.
