Fans Want More Of “Overcompensating” – So Does Benito Skinner

If you binged the entire first season of Overcompensating in a single weekend, you’re probably wondering what’s next for Benny. The raunchy and surprisingly sweet comedy shot to the number one spot on Prime Video after its release, but a second season has not been greenlit just yet.

Fans are desperate for more, and it seems the show’s creators are, too. Earlier this week at an event in Hollywood, creator and star Benito Skinner, along with co-star Mary Beth Barone and showrunner Scott King, shared their ideas for a potential return to campus.

So What Could Happen In Season Two?

Skinner confirmed that the team is more than ready to continue the story. “We have so many stories that we are not done telling,” he said. He mentioned wanting to explore the tension between being in and out of the closet and giving more screen time to guest stars like Connie Britton and Kyle MacLachlan. “There’s so much more to say here, and if you’ve seen the finale, you know that they might have to talk.”

A Story That Still Needs Telling

While the show is full of laughs, Skinner also reflected on why a coming-out story is still so necessary. He pushed back on the idea that “everyone’s gay now,” a sentiment he feels might be true in Los Angeles or New York, but not everywhere else.

“I don’t think we know what people are saying in locker rooms in Idaho still,” Skinner said. “It really took me one line that someone said when I was in first grade to be like, oh, I’m unlovable like this. I have to change who I am.”

He also touched on one of the first season’s most talked-about scenes, where Benny digs through a bin to check for a used condom after letting his crush use his room. Skinner finds the awkward moment beautiful. “I think all of us have a private moment of exploring desire,” he reflected. “I know that all of you have done some shit like this because my DMs after… I didn’t need to know that!”

So, how can you help make a second season happen? The cast jokingly offered some advice. “Go home and stream it, even if you’ve seen it,” Skinner laughed. Mary Beth Barone added, “Write! Write to Amazon. Write to your senators.”

For now, you can watch the first season of Overcompensating on Prime Video.
