Emmy Nominations 2024: Queer Representation Takes Center Stage, But Some Fan Favorites Left Out

The 2024 Emmy nominations are out, and it’s time to shine a spotlight on the best TV shows and talents over the past year. Here’s a breakdown of the nominees featuring LGBTQIA+ actors and themes.

“Hacks” Hacks into Comedy Series Category

The beloved HBO Max series Hacks, featuring a predominantly queer cast and creative team, has once again secured a spot in the Best Comedy Series category. The show’s witty writing and stellar performances continue to resonate with audiences and critics alike.

Best Limited or Anthology Series: Baby Reindeer and Ripley

Both Baby Reindeer and Ripley have earned spots in this category. These series are recognised for their compelling narratives and standout performances.

Best Television Movie: Red, White & Royal Blue

Red, White & Royal Blue is a fan favourite, capturing hearts with its romantic storyline. It’s no surprise it’s up for Best Television Movie.

Jodie Foster and Matt Bomer Lead the Pack

Jodie Foster, a trailblazer for LGBTQIA+ representation in Hollywood, has earned a well-deserved nomination for Best Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series. In the Lead Actor category, Matt Bomer’s powerful performance in Fellow Travelers has also been recognised, alongside Richard Gadd for Baby Reindeer and Andrew Scott for Ripley.

Jonathan Bailey’s nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Fellow Travelers. In the comedy realm, Bowen Yang’s nomination for his work on Saturday Night Live showcases the importance of queer voices in sketch comedy.

Sarah Paulson’s guest appearance in Mr. & Mrs. Smith has left a lasting impression, earning her a nomination for Best Guest Actress in a Drama Series

Reality TV Representation

The reality competition category sees the ever-fabulous RuPaul’s Drag Race sashaying its way to another nomination. Queer Eye also secures a spot in the Best Structured Reality Program category, celebrating the show’s heartwarming stories.

And let’s not forget Tig Notaro, whose directing skills for Tig Notaro: Hello Again earned her a nod in the Best Directing for a Variety Special category.

The snubs that left us shook!

While there’s much to celebrate, a few fan favorites were notably absent from the nominations. Mary And George, a poignant exploration of queer love, surprisingly missed out on acting nods for its leads, Nicholas Galitzine and Julianne Moore. The beloved British series Heartstopper was overlooked in the Limited Anthology Series category, despite its critical acclaim and devoted fanbase.

The Emmys 2024 nominations reflect a growing appreciation for diverse and inclusive storytelling. These shows and actors are making significant contributions to the entertainment industry, and their recognition is well-deserved.

Don’t miss the award night this coming September 15.
