Elton John Pays Tribute To George Michael At Glastonbury In Final UK Show
On Sunday, June 25, Elton John headlined the Glastonbury Music Festival at the Pyramid Stage marking his final UK live performance, reports The Guardian.
For the last five years, Elton has been on his Farewell Yellow Brick Road world tour which are said to be his last live performances.
Farewell Yellow Brick Road
Elton has had a career spanning over 60 years, beginning in 1962 when he was hired as a pianist at a pub. Since then, he has released some of the biggest hits in music. There have been some concerns about Elton’s ability to perform at the level he is used to but this tour has shown he is still a fine showman.
During his performance at Glastonbury, Elton said, “It’s a very special and emotional night for me as it may be my last ever show in England, so I better play well and entertain you as you’ve been standing there so long.” Elton’s set included some of the biggest hits of his career.
Before playing Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me, Elton introduced his band and then paid tribute to George Michael. The pair collaborated in 1991 to release a version of Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me which hit number one on UK charts, reports The Independent.
“It’s a very, very special day today and I wonder how I’m going to approach it,” said the singer. “George Michael, my friend, my inspiration. Today would have been his 60th birthday and so I want to dedicate this song to his memory. All of the music he left us with, which is so gorgeous. This is for you, George.”
If Glastonbury is to be Elton John’s final UK show, many of his adoring fans would say he went out with a bang.
