Drag Queens Trixie Mattel and Katya Zamolodchikova Lose Their Minds Over Iconic Aussie Comedy “Kath And Kim”
In a new episode of I Like To Watch on Netflix’s YouTube channel, drag queens Trixie Mattel and Katya Zamolodchikova react to the iconic Australian series Kath And Kim. The show, which has a devoted LGBTQIA+ fanbase worldwide, was surprisingly new to the former Drag Race stars.
Despite their initial unfamiliarity with the series, Trixie and Katya were quickly converted into fans. However, they struggled with the broad Australian accents of Fountain Lakes, the fictional suburb where the show is set.
For Aussies who have watched Kath And Kim countless times over the past two decades, it is a unique experience to see the show through fresh eyes. The drag queens marvelled at Jane Turner and Gina Riley’s wig work as they seamlessly switched between playing Kath, Kim, Prue, Trude, and other side characters.
The characters’ ages left Trixie and Katya baffled. They questioned how viewers were supposed to believe that Kath and Kim were mother and daughter when they appeared to be around the same age. In reality, Riley and Turner were born just six months apart.
“[Are they] 42, or 70, or 35?” Katya asks. “I don’t know what their age gap is, but either could be mother or daughter.”
Trixie adds, “I love that they’re pretending there’s enough of an age gap for that person to give birth to that person.”
Amid the laughters there was also confusion. The drag queens wondered about the meaning of terms like “connubials” and “piss-elegant.” They also questioned whether Australians realise how bizarre they sound to the rest of the world.
Thanks to I Like To Watch, a whole new international audience has discovered the classic Australian comedy series Kath And Kim. As Trixie and Katya’s reactions show, the show’s humour and characters continue to captivate and entertain viewers, even those encountering it for the first time.
