Don’t You Think Luke Macfarlane Would Have Made A Perfect Ken In The “Barbie” Movie?

Luke Macfarlane (Universal Pictures)

Luke Macfarlane has told The Hollywood Reporter about his recent big projects including gay rom-com Bros, comedy series Platonic and the Netflix Christmas film Single All The Way.

Macfarlane spoke about having to give up a role in Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated Barbie to be a part of the Platonic series.

Aesthetically speaking, he IS Ken

Macfarlane has been acting for 20 years, starting with his breakout role on Brothers And Sisters. He was among the first major actors to come out as gay back in 2008 and reported finding it difficult to find roles following this. Bros was an opportunity for Macfarlane to break back into the mainstream, but it wasn’t his only big opportunity.

According to Macfarlane, he was offered a small role in the Barbie film by Greta Gerwig. Barbie stars Margot Robbie and brings a fresh and empowering twist to the iconic doll’s story. If it weren’t for timing conflicts with Platonic, Macfarlane says he would have been excited to be a part of such a massive project. “It was one of those brutal things. Yeah, the timing couldn’t work out for both… It was a small, little part, but I’ve never been part of some beautiful, big, cool thing like that. It would have been cool to be able to do both,” he says.

Although he would have been a perfect choice to play one of the Kens, Platonic has been a series that Macfarlane reportedly loves working on. His co-stars Seth Rogan and Rose Byrne are two giant comedic names and to be playing alongside them gives Macfarlane hope.

“The fact that that can still work in spite of what we think of the performer shows that our audience is more open-minded,” he says. “I recognise I’m not a household name by any stretch of the imagination, but that it doesn’t need to be alienating that I can play a straight guy that is in a healthy relationship, that shows something about where we’ve come.”
