Do Cops Make You Feel Safe? DNA Readers Have Their Say…

POLL: DNA’s Instagram | HAVE YOUR SAY | Instagram

Police presence at the Sydney Gay And Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade was highly contentious this year. Following the tragic deaths of Jesse Baird and his partner Luke Davies at the hands of an officer, many members of the Australian LGBTQIA+ community felt uncomfortable allowing NSW Police to march.

Despite this, police were allowed to show their Pride without retributive action from displeased parties. It got us thinking about a question we posted on our Instagram a few weeks back: “Do cops do a good job protecting LGBTQIA+ people in your area?”

HERE IS HOW SOME DNA READERS RESPONDED…

Here in the UK the Police are very pro active in supporting the gay community – Simonboothphotos

If we ended the War on Drugs and properly funded mental health services and public housing most of the problems around policing would disappear. – Andrewmopotts

Straight or gay, they’ve become people I don’t trust. They take liberties where they shouldn’t, harass people more than protect these days. They have far too much “power” while doing what they want in disregard to the actual laws they were meant to enforce. They are public servants who feel they are above the law. Too few good cops out there. Thankful for the few. – court.aston

I wouldn’t know but I think our cops are probably very racist most of the cops I’ve ever seen are really rude – deroachmotel753

Love my masculine muscled police officers – great_uncle_joe

The St Pete (FL) police are fantastic! They are regularly out on the streets talking with people. They have a significant presence at every Pride event. They have trained mental health professionals to respond to appropriate domestic situations. It is a privilege to live here with these city services! – daddyafdarling

Hell no! They ignore our cases, laugh out loud during crime scenes, and assign our cases to people who dont give a damn!! – Amwhair

Cops don’t protect anything but the 1 percent lmao – _michvl

If you voted by chance to defund the police, you have zero right to complain if there aren’t enough officers to answer your call. I don’t have issues with our police dept. – Wilkinsonpauld

I dunno, to protect sounds proactive. The police are purely reactive. – mushinstrength

The Chief of police in Atlanta is openly gay…he is doing a good job – mbarb50

No. Absolutely not. Neither are agencies that are supposed to protect rights. They literally think LGBTQIA+ rights are a joke to tee-hee and twitter about when they’re not on camera and there’s no witnesses. – lemarquis_d_aubepine

In my area ( specifically Broward County Florida which is Fort Lauderdale area). Gays & POC are treated with respect and I would go so far as to say equal. We have a black police chief. We have a gay mayor. ( possibly the reasons ). – Johnweiser1

I did my internship at a police department in a very big city and I was out of the closet the whole time. I’ve literally never worked somewhere I was more accepted and embraced. We even had a Sgt. who was a trans woman, she was a total badass. – spartantwink

Nope, they are useless. This has nothing to do with “protecting lgb” people, they are rubbish across the board. They didn’t even attend after my home suffered an arson attack. – Antondrakethevampire

The response we received from our global online community appears to be a mixed bag. This poll was posted on February 02, 2024 and we were curious whether the light of recent events has changed anyone’s tune. If you feel inclined, we would love to hear what you have to say.
