Disney Vs DeSantis? Neo-Nazis Protest Disney World With Swastikas And DeSantis Merch
On Saturday, June 10, Neo-Nazis gathered outside Disney World protesting against the entertainment giant over what they perceive as a lack of support for Governor Ron DeSantis, reports Sarasota Herald-Tribune.
DeSantis is a figure who has courted support from far-right groups with his anti-LGBTQIA+ stance and efforts to curtail drag shows. The demonstration reflects the ongoing tensions that Disney faces with the Florida governor’s supporters after their withdrawal of support following the signing of the Don’t Say Gay law.
According to Sarasota Herald-Tribune, protesters displaying swastikas congregated outside the theme park and chanted extremist slogans and opposed Disney’s unwillingness to back Governor DeSantis. The governor has gained fervent support from far-right organisations through his consistent promotion of policies targeting the LGBTQIA+ community. His vocal opposition to drag shows and his efforts to limit their presence in the state have garnered him significant backing from those who align with his conservative values.
Disney has created an image consistent with a commitment to inclusivity and has been navigating a delicate balancing act amid these controversies. Some conservatives argue that the entertainment conglomerate has succumbed to progressive pressures and a “woke agenda”. On the other hand, the company has faced pressure from activists and advocacy groups to take a stronger stance on LGBTQIA+ issues and demonstrate unwavering support for equal rights.
Law enforcement authorities responded to the demonstration and the consequent counter-protests with no arrests made on the day, reports Sarasota Herald-Tribune. The far-right, Neo-Nazi protest has gone viral online with many sharing their disapproval including Representative Anna Eskamani who called it “absolutely disgusting”.
