Colman Domingo Walked The Oscars Red Carpet In Red But Left With Something Bigger

Colman Domingo may not have taken home the Oscar for Best Actor this year, but he still managed to steal the show. Dressed in a striking custom red Valentino ensemble, he lit up the red carpet at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre with his husband, Raul Domingo, by his side. “I wanted to be the colour of love tonight,” Colman told reporters.

While the award went to Adrien Brody for The Brutalist, Colman’s nomination for his role in Sing Sing marked a historic moment, which is his second consecutive nod in the category. And if you ask him, just being there with love surrounding him was already a win.

A Career Built on Passion

Colman Domingo’s rise to fame started on stage. Born in Philadelphia in 1969, he discovered acting during college and quickly found his place in theatre. His early works, including A Boy And His Soul, showed his ability to weave personal stories with universal themes. This one-man play earned him critical acclaim and set the stage for a career filled with meaningful performances.

Broadway audiences may remember him from The Scottsboro Boys, where his portrayal of Mr. Bones earned him a Tony nomination. But Colman didn’t stop at acting; he also co-wrote the book for Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, proving his versatility as a playwright.

In Hollywood, Domingo has brought depth to roles in films like SelmaIf Beale Street Could Talk, and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. His portrayal of Cutler in Ma Rainey stood out for its emotional complexity, earning him widespread praise. And let’s not forget his Emmy-winning role as Ali in HBO’s Euphoria, where he delivered some of the show’s most unforgettable moments.

A Love Story That Feels Like Fate

If you’ve ever wondered whether love at first sight exists, Colman Domingo’s story might convince you. He met his husband, Raul Domingo, outside a Walgreens in Berkeley back in 2005. Though they didn’t exchange numbers at first, fate or Craigslist brought them back together. Both had posted “Missed Connections” ads about their encounter within hours of each other.

Three days later, they met again, and Colman knew this was something special. “At four in the morning, I said, ‘I think I love you, and you’re about to change my life,” he shared during an interview on The Graham Norton Show. Nearly two decades later, their bond remains strong.

The couple tied the knot in 2014 but have intentionally kept much of their relationship private. “We decided we’d share one story but keep the rest for ourselves,” Colman explained in an interview with The Times. Despite their low profile, their rare public appearances, like their recent Oscars red carpet moment, always leave fans swooning.

Beyond acting, Domingo is also a director and producer with projects that amplify underrepresented voices. His dedication to storytelling goes beyond personal success; it’s about lifting others up and creating space for diverse narratives in Hollywood and beyond.

What’s Next for Colman Domingo?

With upcoming roles in major projects like the Michael Jackson biopic and Tina Fey’s series The Four Seasons, Colman shows no signs of slowing down. He’s even set to direct a Nat King Cole biopic —another testament to his creative vision.

But what truly sets him apart is his philosophy of “radical love.” As he told Time magazine earlier this year, “Everything I do is about seeing each other.” It’s this generosity of spirit that makes him not only a remarkable artist but also a role model for anyone striving to make an impact.
