Charlie Larson, a junior on the University of Michigan gymnastics team, has publicly confirmed a relationship with a fellow Michigan athlete. He posted photos of them together on social media and told Outsports he feels lucky to have found someone who supports him.

A quiet reveal becomes public.

Larson had hinted at a boyfriend a month earlier but kept details private. This weekend he shared images that made the relationship official. He did not want to give away too much about his partner for privacy reasons.

Who is Matthew, then?

Larson identified his partner as Matthew. He is a CrossFit athlete and coach and also performs with the Michigan cheer team. Larson said Matthew brings steady support during a busy life as a student athlete.

What Larson said about the relationship.

Larson told Outsports, “He truly is the best thing to ever happen to me and a genuine good person.” He added that because of his schedule, relationships have been difficult in the past.

With Matthew, he says, “I’ve never been in a relationship because of how hectic my life is, but he’s become a support system that I never knew I needed.”

Larson also said he is learning to see himself beyond gymnastics as his partner values him as Charlie and not just as a gymnast.

Public relationships with athletes still matter. For many on and off campus, visibility can feel like permission to be open about personal life. Larson stepping forward will be noticed by teammates, rivals and younger athletes who face pressure to hide parts of themselves.

Larson is expected to be a key figure as Michigan heads into the 2026 season beginning in early January. As a sophomore, he earned NCAA All-American honours and has been a strong performer on floor exercise. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) recognises All-American status for top collegiate athletes.

At DNA, we watch how lives off the field shape performances on it. Will more athletes feel able to share their lives publicly now? Time will tell.
