Celebrating National Coming Out Day 2022. A Time To Feel Inspired.
National Coming Out Day is celebrated on October 11, and has been for the past 34 years. It’s a day where we take stock of our progress and encourage those who are still figuring things out. First celebrated in Washington during a Lesbian And Gay Rights march in 1987, National Coming Out Day honours the bravery of the LGBTQIA+ community for being true to themselves.
REMEMBER WHY WE NEED NATIONAL COMING OUT DAY
It can be easy to forget the struggles our predecessors faced when LGBTQIA+ rights were still a battle to be won. What began as a way to proudly recognise those of us who stood tall in the face of abject discrimination has become a way to carry on an important legacy.
Thankfully for many, coming out is easier and there is a whole community waiting to embrace those who take that step. So, many may ask, “Why do we still need National Coming Out Day?” It’s important to keep faith with National Coming Out Day and events like Pride and IDAHOBIT because the experience of coming out and being in the LGBTQIA+ community isn’t always easy or safe for everyone.
Remembering this fact means keeping avenues open for those who need support, encouragement and community. National Coming Out Day reminds many they aren’t alone and, in the face of fear and prejudice, they always have a network to back them.
Coming out is a daunting experience for a lot of us and is unique to each individual. On National Coming Out Day, many who are still in the closet get the opportunity to see support from the mainstream with messages such as those from The White House or from celebrities. There’s shared stories of coming out awkwardness and joy. There’s also chances to be seen and heard by the community if one feels ready to come out.
