“Bros” Trolled By Homophobic Reviews – By People Who Haven’t Seen It!
FEATURED: Bros | Website
Billy Eichner and Luke McFarlane star in Bros, the first gay rom-com by a major Hollywood studio, which debuted on September 30 in the US. The much-anticipated film is one of the first to feature gay men playing gay characters in a leading romantic plot, but negative reviews are coming in from viewers who are less than pleased with the LGBTQIA+ material, reports Them.
ARE QUEER PEOPLE NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE A MOMENT IN THE SUN?
From all accounts, Bros should be one of the most successful films of the year with many heralding it as the “return of the rom-com”. Entertainment Weekly called the film, “whip-smart, soft at heart, full of bravura free-form character bits and cul-de-sacs”, while Collider’s review says, “Bros is one of the most hysterical comedies of the year, thanks to the fantastic writing and this tremendous cast.” More positive reviews keep pouring in as the film is watched by audiences in theatres.
These reviews are an acknowledgement that Eichner and fellow screenwriters Nicholas Stoller and Judd Apatow have delivered a great film, one that heroes an unapologetically LGBTQIA+ romance. It comes as a disappointment, however not a surprise, that homophobic reviews seek to tear down that achievement.
According to GCN, reviews from audiences reflected poor ratings from many who had not actually watched the film. As of Friday, September 30, IMDB showed 46% of the user ratings at a one-star despite Rotten Tomatoes having a 95% approval rating. IMDB moderators have decided to remove the false reviews as Bros had not yet reached theatres at the time.
One couldn’t expect Bros to reinvent the wheel in terms of films – it never intended to do that. But it achieved what thousands of films failed to: platform a gay romance with gay actors in an enjoyable, Hollywood-backed production. One thing can be gleaned for certain, many LGBTQIA+ people love the film and applaud Bros.
