Brendan McFatridge: The Hockey Player Making A Difference On And Off The Ice
Brendan McFatridge, an 18-year-old hockey player from Saskatchewan, Alberta, has been named one of Canada’s Gen Z “changemakers” by Children First Canada. McFatridge is the first openly gay player in the Western Hockey League and the highest level of junior hockey in Canada.
In February 2021, McFatridge came out as gay while playing at the AAA level, the highest club level in hockey. His courage and openness have made him a role model for young athletes and helped fight bullying and discrimination in the sport.
“Brendan’s journey is not just a story of achievements but a testament to resilience, courage, and a relentless dedication to creating a better world for everyone,” said Children First Canada.
McFatridge’s impact goes beyond the ice. He has advocated for LGBTQIA+ rights and inclusivity in sports and has spoken out against homophobic attitudes at his Catholic high school. His efforts earned him The Upstander Award for Combating Bullying from Children First Canada.
Off the ice, McFatridge has led several fundraising efforts. He raised over $5,000 (CAD) for an anti-vaping program and over $2,000 (CAD) for the Divine Mercy Orphanage in India. He also runs Cards for Care Edmonton, which shares handmade cards and donated artwork to improve the mental health of healthcare patients in the Edmonton area.
In his free time, McFatridge creates beautiful pointillism art. He sells his pieces and takes requests for custom work.
“So grateful to have been recognized as one of 10 winners of the national Future is Now Awards,” McFatridge wrote on Instagram. “This was a life-changing experience and I couldn’t be happier to have been a part of it.”
McFatridge currently plays for the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers and studies neuroscience at the University of Alberta.
