Flynn has been cast as the lead in Willie And Jimmy Dean, a new feature film currently in development. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie is based on the memoir Surviving James Dean by William Bast, who was the actor’s roommate, close friend, and lover.
The story will cover their relationship from their first meeting at the UCLA theater program until Dean’s tragic death in a car accident in 1955. Director Guy Guido calls it “a tender and sometimes tragic story,” adding, “Brandon Flynn brings both the fire and vulnerability this role demands. I couldn’t imagine anyone more perfect to explore and play out the complexities of James Dean.”
Why this story still matters
So, why is this film so important now? Flynn himself explained that the script humanises a legend. “It highlights how Hollywood has historically forced LGBTQ people into performance, even in their personal lives,” he says. The project avoids sensationalism to instead present Dean “as a man with real, complex relationships.” Looking back at those relaxed summer photos, you cannot help but see the contrast.
