Billy Steinberg, Songwriter Behind “True Colors” And “Like A Virgin”, Dies At 75
The music world has lost a giant
Billy Steinberg, the legendary songwriter who wrote the lyrics to some of the most iconic pop tracks of the last forty years, has died. He was 75.
Steinberg passed away at his home in Brentwood, Los Angeles, after a battle with cancer. His lawyer, Laurie Soriano, confirmed the news this morning.
While his name might not be on the tip of everyone’s tongue, his words certainly are. He gave us the lyrics to True Colours, Like a Virgin, Eternal Flame, and So Emotional.
Writing the soundtrack to our lives
For many of us, Steinberg’s work with songwriting partner Tom Kelly defined the sound of the ’80s and ’90s. They were the duo behind five number-one hits on the US Billboard Hot 100.
Steinberg had a knack for capturing raw, universal emotion. He wrote the lyrics to Madonna’s Like a Virgin while driving his pickup truck, channeling the feelings of a difficult breakup and the spark of a new relationship. It became Madonna’s signature hit and spent six weeks at number one.
But it is True Colours, recorded by Cyndi Lauper, that holds a special place in our hearts. The song has transcended its pop roots to become a global anthem of acceptance and courage. When we hear those opening chords, we know we are in a safe space.
An Aussie connection
He collaborated with the late Chrissy Amphlett and Mark McEntee to write I Touch Myself.
The track was a global smash in 1991. It was provocative, empowering, and undeniably Australian in its attitude. It remains a karaoke staple and a testament to Steinberg’s versatility. He also co-wrote I’ll Stand By You with Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders, giving us yet another ballad to belt out when feelings run high.
Tributes flow for a pop master
Friends and collaborators have begun sharing their memories. Cyndi Lauper took to social media to honour her friend.
“I’m so sorry to hear that my friend Billy Steinberg has passed away,” Lauper wrote. “He was such a nice guy and very supportive. My thoughts are with his family, loved ones, and Tom during this sad time.”
Nancy Wilson of Heart, who scored a massive number one with Steinberg’s power ballad Alone, simply described him as “a wonderful spirit”.
Steinberg was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2011. His legacy lives on in the songs that continue to fill dance floors and bring tears to our eyes.
