Biden-Harris Reform Makes PrEP “No Cost” On Insurance Plans

According to The Bay Area Reporter, Carl Schmid from the HIV+ Hepatitis Policy Institute says this change matters. “Many people who need PrEP the most haven’t been able to get it. Zero cost-sharing means more people can choose the HIV prevention that works best for them.”
The new rule says private health plans must cover all FDA-approved prevention methods without making patients pay extra. This includes Apretude, the injectable PrEP option approved in 2021, along with pills like Truvada and Descovy.
Why It’s Important
About one-third of people with private insurance still pay out of pocket for PrEP. That’s been a big barrier for many. The new rule aims to fix this by making all options free.
President Biden emphasised personal freedom in healthcare choices. The administration also added similar coverage for birth control options, pushing back against restrictions on medical choices.
Health advocates say the next step is making sure these rules are followed. They’re working to ensure both state and federal officials enforce these coverage requirements.
