Australian Senate Says No to Pauline Hanson’s “Hurtful” Anti-Trans Bill

Australian Federal senators have decisively rejected an attempt by One Nation’s Pauline Hanson to amend the Sex Discrimination Act. This move, reported by Q News, aimed to reduce discrimination protections for trans and gender-diverse individuals.

Hanson’s proposed Sex Discrimination Amendment (Acknowledging Biological Reality) Bill sought to eliminate gender identity from the Act, sparking significant controversy.

“A Platform for Hate”

The bill faced immediate opposition. In a press release, Hanson controversially questioned the existence of trans identities, advocating for what she termed “biological reality”. However, her draft was swiftly dismissed in its initial vote, with firm opposition from Labor and the Greens.

Greens Senator Steph Hodgkins-May was vocal in her condemnation, stating, “The Greens will not allow One Nation to use parliamentary privilege to deny the existence of the trans and gender-diverse community. Trans rights are human rights, and they are non-negotiable.”

Hodgkins-May emphasised the importance of creating a safe environment for the gender-diverse community, stressing that they deserve respect and equality without facing discrimination.

“Extreme Measures”

Coalition Senator Jonathan Duniam expressed concern over the rejection process, noting that it is unusual for a bill to be blocked at the first reading. Typically, bills are allowed to proceed to ensure fair consideration. However, he acknowledged that such a step is reserved for “the most extreme of circumstances.”

The bill was deemed extreme by many, including Greens MPs who labeled it as hateful. Labor Senator Katy Gallagher highlighted the potential harm it could cause within the community. She stated, “It is very rare to not support the first reading… This bill falls into that category. The division, the hurt, the pain that that causes for gender-diverse members of the community is real.”

Gallagher urged her colleagues to recognise and address the harm caused by such divisive proposals, advocating for unity and support for all community members.
