The first trailer has dropped for A Night Like This, a new film that throws two men together for one intense night in London. Starring Alexander Lincoln and Jack Brett Anderson, the movie is set for release on September 26 and looks to be a raw and honest story about what happens after the bars close.

So what’s the story…

The plot centres on Lukas, a quiet actor played by Jack Brett Anderson, and Oliver, a bold but struggling club owner played by Alexander Lincoln. After a less-than-charming first encounter, the two spend the next ten hours wandering through the city. The film has drawn comparisons to a queer Before Sunrise, focusing on the intimate, searching conversations that can only happen in the early hours of the morning. This is the feature debut for director Liam Calvert and the first produced screenplay from writer Diego Scerrati.

And the performances are already getting noticed.

The film premiered at the BFI Flare: London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival to a positive reception, especially for its two leads. One viewer who attended a screening noted Lincoln’s previous work as a drawcard.

“I originally booked tickets because of Alexander Lincoln’s excellent performance in the 2022 movie In From the Side… Go and see this impressive little film for great acting, and great scenes around London.”

Critic Scott McCutcheon agreed, praising the actors’ chemistry. “As the boisterous Oliver, Alexander Lincoln conveys his character’s bravado with gusto, while Jack Brett Anderson captures Lukas’ angst with economic precision.”

It’s not your typical queer movie.

What sets the film apart from other romances? According to Lincoln, it avoids some common tropes by focusing on universal themes. “What’s nice and different about this film is that it doesn’t fit into that queer sphere, in a sense that it’s not all about that. It’s about connections and lust.”

Anderson added that the story is about pushing past your comfort zone and finding hope in unexpected places. “Take a risk! Have those conversations, especially if you’re feeling like there’s no hope,” he said. “You can learn a lot from strangers. When it seems like it’s the end, it’s not.” With its focus on gritty connection over polished romance, A Night Like This looks like a compelling reason to head to the cinema later this month.
