The AFL is investigating an incident involving Port Adelaide forward Jeremy Finlayson who admitted to making a homophobic slur during his team’s recent victory over Essendon.

The derogatory remark occurred during the third quarter of the match at Adelaide Oval and was reportedly captured by an umpire’s microphone.

AFL’s Toxic Culture

At least one Essendon player brought attention to Finlayson’s remark. In a statement released by Port Adelaide on Sunday, Finlayson took full responsibility for his actions and expressed remorse. He acknowledges the unacceptable nature of his words. He immediately addressed the issue with his club during the three-quarter time break and personally apologised to the affected individual after the game.

“I knew straight away that it was not acceptable and I take full responsibility,” Finlayson says. “I addressed it at the time and… let everyone know what happened, and it’s now in the hands of the AFL to investigate.”

The AFL has been plagued with internal struggles against anti-LGBTQIA+ sentiments. In April of 2023, Australian Football League CEO Gillon McLachlan stated there are players who are gay who choose to keep their sexuality private due to the pressures that come with being the first [to come out].

Organisers of the AFL have been making attempts to reform the public image of the league, and many are concerned that Finalyson’s comments have ruined the ground gained.

The club states he will receive counselling from club leaders in the coming days, while the AFL Integrity Unit conducts its investigation. AFL CEO Andrew Dillon assured that the matter will be addressed promptly with accountability measures to be determined.

This incident follows a recent case involving North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson, who was fined $20,000 and received a suspended two-match ban for allegedly using homophobic language towards St Kilda players during a pre-season game.
