“A Nice Indian Boy” — The Must-See Gay Rom-Com With A 100% Rotten Tomatoes Score
In an exclusive interview with Attitude, rising star Karan Soni and Jonathan Groff (Looking, Dr Who), along with director Roshan Sethi, discussed their new indie film A Nice Indian Boy, which has taken the critics by storm, earning a flawless 100% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Boy Meets Boy: A Modern Love Story
Soni, known for his role in the Deadpool films, plays a young man who falls for Groff’s character. “My character meets Jonathan’s character, we fall in love, and then I have to introduce him to my very traditional Indian family,” Soni explained.
Groff, a Tony Award-winner and star of Frozen and Glee, was moved by the film’s power. “I was overwhelmed by the power of this movie,” he gushed.
“This Movie Is for Everyone”
Director Sethi emphasised the movie’s universal appeal, stating, “I’ve been saying the movie is for everyone – for queer people, for not queer people, for Indian people, not Indian people.”
Soni added, “It’s not a coming out story – [Naveen] came out years before the movie starts. It’s that part in the queer journey where you haven’t brought someone home yet.”
At Q&As, parents have shared their own journeys of missing their children’s weddings due to lack of acceptance. Soni revealed, “A lot of them spoke about, if they had a version of this movie earlier, maybe would have bridged that gap sooner.”
Groff hopes his fans will support this groundbreaking film. “I’m so happy to bring them this story. But I think the movie is powerful enough to bring people on its own accord,” he stated.
Sethi stressed the importance of film criticism for independent films. “It’s the most important thing… Independent films in particular… survive on the critics’ response,” he explained.
