A “Glamorous” New Series Has Launched On Netflix – Kim Cattrall And Miss Benny Make Up An Iconic Cast

Glamorous (Netflix)

A new series has debuted on Netflix called Glamorous and it features a queer lead alongside Kim Cattrall. The sugary new show centres around Marco, a twenty-something young queer who begins working for one of the biggest names in the cosmetic industry after a chance encounter.

The series explores pivotal LGBTQIA+ themes such as gender identity, queer relationships and heartbreak and is perfect to binge watch during Pride Month.

This show couldn’t be more slay if it tried

Glamorous protagonist Marco is played by Miss Benny, the recently out transgender woman known for her work in Fuller House and Dream Catcher. With the release of Glamorous on June 22, Miss Benny is opening up about being trans, much like her character in the series does. In a feature written by Miss Benny for TIME, the young actress says, “The gap is quickly closing between now and June 22: the day that my television series Glamorous will come out on Netflix. And along with it, I too will come out as the transgender woman I’ve been privately living as for the last few years.”

“It was really important that Marco’s trans-ness was not the plot of the show. It’s not a ‘twist’ to surprise the audience,” she says. “Instead, we get to watch a young queer person experiencing first love and heartbreak, career success and failure, and everything else that comes with being a young adult… while also discovering their identity in the background of life. Because being transgender is not something you do, it’s who you are.”

If the trailer for Glamorous hasn’t fully sold it for you, many watchers have commented on the similarities the show has with the now-iconic movie The Devil Wears Prada. If these reviews are to believed, Glamorous takes this premise, turns it queer and provides 10 episodes worth of high-quality viewing. And if Meryl Streep is to Miranda Priestly, then Kim Cattrall is to Madolyn Addison – an executive girl-bossing her way to the top with Marco (Benny) trying desperately to keep up while juggling their personal life. The cast is joined by more LGBTQIA+ talent such as Zane Phillips, Michael Hsu Rosen and Ayesha Harris.

For Miss Benny, this series is more important than ever. Amid rising anti-transgender communities, Glamorous may offer young trans watchers a moment to feel seen.

“In the year since we shot the series, the political space – and specifically the anti-trans movement – has been so overwhelming,” says Miss Benny. “But then I am reminded that this fear is exactly why I wanted to include my transition in the show: Because I know that when I was a terrified queer kid in Texas, it was the queer joy I found in droplets online that guided me to my happiness. And if someone like me is out there feeling the weight of being othered, I want them to have a place they can see someone like us thrive and be celebrated.”
