A Chorus Line Comes To Darlinghurst Theatre

Robert Catto

The iconic musical follows 17 hopeful dancers who are put through their paces in a gruelling auditioning for the chorus of a new show.

Tim Draxl, well known in theatre and from television’s A Place To Call Home, takes on the lead role as director/choreographer Zach in a new production for Darlinghurst Theatre.

“It’s a great character and a bit different for me because I’m usually singing and dancing,” says Draxl. “This time I get to bark the orders!

As a performer, directing is always in the back of your mind and there’s a chance that one day you could move into it,” he says. “So it’s an interesting introduction into that world.”

Draxl has been in the entertainment business for 20 years so has plenty of experience with directors to draw on.

“I’ve been around directors for the best part of my life, but I’ve looked specifically at directors who also work as choreographers. My main focus was Bob Fosse and I watched documentaries, including All That Jazz. He was very hands-on and particular about the style he wanted. Zach is like that. He’s kind of cold to the performers and very specific about how he wants his choreography performed.”
