The Irrepressibles Just Dropped An All-Queer LA Summer Video For “Sweet And Unique”
The Irrepressibles have released the video for Sweet and Unique, a sun-soaked, all-queer romp shot across Los Angeles. It’s the latest single from Jamie Irrepressible, the mind behind the project, whose catalogue has passed 450 million Spotify streams. The track is a summer bop, and the clip plays it as flirty, sweaty and fun as that sounds.
A Duet Built On Desire
The song runs 1960s rhythm and blues through glam-rock swagger, with gospel-choir flourishes and soaring strings that nod to Jamie’s Manchester roots. It also marks a first. Longtime violinist Elliot Lyte steps up to the mic, after Jamie clocked his soulful voice in the studio and wanted a duet about queer desire.
The result sits at the fun end of Yo Homo!, his fourth album, released in 2024 with a deluxe edition in 2025. We called that record “a major gay release” with “an unquestionably sexy bite”, and this single carries the same charge.
Director Samuel McGuire built the video around two couples crossing a baking city to reach the beach. Everyone they meet along the way is queer, and the heat does the rest. “I wanted to use the hot, sticky summer days to create those sexual innuendos and tension,” McGuire says, describing a walk that ends in a sunset dip.
The cast keeps the chemistry high without losing the song’s lightness. Jamie is characteristically breezy about handing his track to a director. “It’s like a day in the life of the gays in Los Angeles, a bit of fun,” he says. Have you watched it yet? It’s made for a warm evening.
The single also warms up for True Pride, a fully queer-curated arts and music festival Jamie helps put together. It lands at Hidden in Manchester on Saturday 1 August, built by a group of lesbian, trans and gay friends who wanted queer artists driving every part of the bill.
The Irrepressibles headline a line-up that includes Planningtorock, jasmine.4.t and The Hidden Cameras, with Jamie also playing a DJ set. Tickets start at around £23. Every artist, DJ, speaker and film on the program is queer, which is rather the point.
