Kevin Carrera Won Mr Gay Spain 2026, But It Was About His Father’s Rejection That Completely Silenced The Crowd
Kevin Carrera, a 27-year-old model from Vigo, is the new Mr Gay Spain 2026. He took the title on 3 July at the 19th Mr Gay Spain gala in Plaza de España, Madrid, part of the city’s official Pride celebrations. The crown was the headline. His story was the reason the room went quiet.
Representing Galicia, Carrera used his time on stage to talk about the moment his life split in two.
“My father disappeared from my life the day I told him I was gay,” he told the judges and the crowd.
He came out around ten years ago in Vigo, where he was insulted in the street for it, and he has not spoken to his father since.
He could have kept that private. Instead he made it the point. “If my story manages to get even one father or one mother to embrace their child instead of rejecting them, it will already have been worth it,” he said. How many pageant winners spend their big moment thinking about someone else’s parents?
More Than A Sash
After the win, Carrera posted a simple line to Instagram: “Officially Mr Gay Spain. I still can’t believe all of this.” He thanked his fellow contestants and promised to “represent our entire community in the best way I possibly can.”
He saved the biggest thank-you for his mother, the parent who stayed. Carrera has a large online following, and he keeps using it despite a steady stream of abuse.
“It’s amazing that I keep getting so many hate comments towards my person for being free and living my life liking what I love,” he said.
Carrera is not a full-time celebrity. He works in retail and is training to be a flight attendant, which puts his platform closer to home for a lot of readers. As titleholder he is backing a campaign called #OrgulloEnMiPueblo, or Pride in My Town, aimed at LGBTQIA+ visibility in small towns rather than the big cities where it is easier to be out.
