“This is Andrew Akuruka, and honestly, he’s one of a kind. He’s a London-based chef with his own business, a recent Mr Gay GB finalist, and just an all-round beautiful, sweet guy.
What I love about him is how he totally breaks the mould: dressed like a rapper, confident, grounded, and more importantly so emotionally intelligent and open.
As a black gay man myself, I’ll own the stereotypes I’ve internalised. I would NEVER clock him as gay at first, and that’s what I find so refreshing: he reminds me of how wonderfully diverse our community really is. I’m also really grateful for the opportunity to confront the assumptions I make about people.
