“300 Letters” Makes Gay Love Look Honest, Messy And Human

A new film is challenging the predictable formulas we often see in queer cinema, 300 Letters, from Argentine writer and director Lucas Santa Ana, arrives on digital platforms from November 11, 2025, and it is already being called a refreshingly honest anti-rom-com.

So, what’s the story.

The film introduces us to Jero and Tom, a young couple whose relationship looks perfect from the outside. But on their first anniversary, Jero comes home to find Tom gone. The only thing left behind is a box filled with 300 letters, each one revealing a piece of their shared history. As Jero reads through the letters, he confronts the hidden truths and emotional cracks that were there all along.

It gets into the stuff we don’t always talk about…

This isn’t just another breakup movie. Director Lucas Santa Ana wanted to look at the conflicts that happen within our relationships and community. “We always talk about the discrimination we suffer from outsiders, but we rarely think about the discrimination we inflict on ourselves due to the prejudices we carry,” Santa Ana explained. “In 300 Letters, I wanted to explore this topic with a fun and relaxed perspective.”

A fresh take on queer film.

But what happens when a story focuses on the messy, complicated reality of a relationship instead of external drama?

According to Ray Murray, President of the film’s distributor Cinephobia Releasing, 300 Letters does exactly that. “Let’s face it, gay cinema has gotten a bit lazy,” Murray said. “Start with a few shirtless hunks or twinks, spice it with some sex, add a familiar storyline and call it a day. But 300 Letters boldly breaks the mould with its intriguing story, a funny, at times painful but expertly crafted autopsy of a relationship.”

The film, which stars Cristian Mariani and Gastón Frías, premiered at Roze Filmdagen in Amsterdam and Wicked Queer in Boston. It will be available on Video on Demand (VOD) and other digital platforms in Spanish with English subtitles.
