Robert Irwin Slays On The Dancefloor And Tells DNA His Best Mates Are Gay

We always suspected he had the moves! Robert Irwin is currently lighting up the screen on the US version of Dancing With The Stars, and we are delighted to see him doing so well. The charisma and energy he brings to his performances are the same qualities that made him a perfect Straight Mate for our Men To Admire issue, DNA #291.

Robert has proven himself to be a natural performer and talented dancer away from the jungle and under the studio lights. His enthusiasm is infectious, and it is obvious he’s having the time of his life.

His love for a great dance track is nothing new to us at DNA. When Matt Myers interviewed him for our Straight Mate feature, he asked what song will always get up on the floor.

“Gosh, there are so many songs that I reckon fit into that, like Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! by ABBA. And then there’s Dancing Queen. That list goes on. I mean, ABBA supplied the dance floor songs of the century.

“I love the Voulez-Vous album. It’s funny because my music is so varied. I’ll go from AC/DC to John Williamson. I think it’s good to have a broad taste in music. You’ll never get bored.”

A true friend to the community.

During our chat, he spoke warmly about his closest friends, who happen to be a married gay couple. “One hundred per cent! Luke, who was one of my best mates growing up, is gay, and he’s also the General Manager of Australia Zoo,” he said. “He and his husband Mitch only recently got married and they are two of my closest mates. They are like big brothers.”

He is also no stranger to queer television royalty, having appeared on RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under with his sister Bindi.

“What an experience that was! It was hilarious,” he recalled, adding that meeting RuPaul was an honour. The best part? He brought a special guest. “We had one of our beautiful big Burmese pythons with us. It was a bit of a Britney Spears moment!”

So, who is his ultimate celebrity crush?

In our full interview, we got him to spill the tea on which guy he would turn for, and he did not hesitate to name a very famous fellow Aussie – Chris Hemsworth!
