Reuben Kaye Announced As Artistic Director Of The Adelaide Cabaret Festival And Came Out Firing!

Reuben Kaye (Claudio Raschella)

“Bigger, longer, and thiccer than ever.” That’s how Reuben Kaye billed enGORGEd XXL, and he wasn’t exaggerating. What followed wasn’t just cabaret it was a high-heeled power move. A filthy, fearless reminder of why Adelaide gave him the crown before the crown even arrived.

Adelaide got a taste of what’s coming…

Reuben Kaye’s return to the Adelaide Cabaret Festival wasn’t subtle. It didn’t need to be. Already named Artistic Director for 2026, Kaye stepped onto the Her Majesty’s Theatre stage this June with the confidence of someone who knows exactly where he belongs.

Backed by a full band including strings, brass, and longtime collaborator Shannon D Whitelock as Musical Director, enGORGEd XXL took everything from the original 2023 version and blew it wide open. The vocals were rich, the visuals were sharp, and the energy was exactly what you’d expect from someone about to lead a major festival.

Same banter. New agenda.

The material wasn’t all new, but it didn’t need to be. The set list walked the line between outrageous comedy and raw vocal drama. Between each number, Kaye served up his signature banter: filthy, unfiltered, and piercingly aware of the world he was talking about. Nothing was off-limits. That’s kind of the point.

Whether he was hitting you with a punchline or a political gut punch, he made sure the audience felt it.

The look, the sound, the moment.

In 10-inch heels and custom couture, Reuben Kaye cut a silhouette no one could ignore. His voice moved from deep, growling lows to falsetto highs without losing an ounce of control. And yet, what stood out more than the visuals or the vocals was the intention. This wasn’t just entertainment. It was a cabaret with teeth.

Kaye knows how to seduce a room, but he also knows how to provoke one. That tension between pleasure and discomfort, between drag and drama, is where his work lives. And it’s exactly what makes him the right fit for the festival’s future.

With enGORGEd XXL, Reuben Kaye reminded Adelaide and anyone paying attention that cabaret doesn’t have to play it safe. It shouldn’t. His 2026 directorship promises more than just sparkle. It hints at a festival that’s willing to push back, ask questions, and stay fabulous while doing it.
