The Gay Sitcom We Deserve: Matt Bomer And Nathan Lane Move In Together In “Mid-Century Modern”
The creators of Will And Grace (1998-2020) have done it again. Max Mutchnick and David Kohan bring us a funny, warm sitcom about three gay friends who end up living together in Palm Springs. Mid-Century Modern hit Hulu on March 28, and it feels like catching up with old friends who just happen to be funnier than yours.
It’s filmed old-school style with multiple cameras in front of a live audience. Yes, like they did in the golden age of TV! James Burrows, who directed Friends (1994-2004) and Will And Grace, brings his magic touch to this series.
Meet Your New Favourite Roommates
The story kicks off at a funeral. Nathan Lane plays Bunny Schneiderman, a successful bra company owner who can’t quite squeeze out real tears. Next to him stands Arthur Broussard (Nathan Lee Graham), a former fashion journalist who cares more about the deceased’s poorly chosen burial suit than the actual death.
Then Matt Bomer (Fellow Travelers) bursts in as Jerry Frank, a flight attendant still in uniform with his suitcase rolling behind him. This trio forms the heart of the show, along with Bunny’s mother, Sybil, played by the late Linda Lavin in one of her final roles.
After the funeral, the friends gather at Bunny’s large home. They talk about their 30-year friendship and face a big question: what now? With their friend gone and their own lives scattered across different cities, they make a bold choice. They decide to live together under one roof in Palm Springs, along with Sybil.
“With everything going on globally, this feel-good, low-stakes show might be exactly what audiences are searching for,” notes the Variety review. The show offers something we all need: comfort, laughs, and the joy of watching friends figure out life together.
Golden Girl Gets a Modern Makeover
Do you remember The Golden Girls? This show has a similar feel but with its own style. Each character has a familiar vibe:
Bunny functions as the Dorothy of the group. He seeks a life-changing romance he’s never found and doesn’t think he deserves one.
Arthur combines Blanche’s attitude with fashion icon André Leon Talley’s flair. He still feels bitter about losing his place in New York fashion circles and loves to take control.

Jerry, the youngest at 40-something, plays the Rose role. He’s a cheerful, good-looking former Mormon with more muscle than brain power.
Sybil steps perfectly into the Sophia role as the sharp-tongued mother who says what she thinks but means well.
What to Expect: Laughs, Guest Stars, and Adult Humour
Since Mid-Century Modern lives on Hulu, Mutchnick and Kohan enjoy fewer content limits. This means more adult jokes and colourful language than network TV allows. The 10-episode first season has some standouts, particularly episode 2, Working Girls, and episode 5, Hello, Fisty’s, which takes the gang to Fire Island.

We love seeing how the show handles topics like sexuality, gender, race, and class with sharp humour. The cast chemistry makes everything work, especially with Linda Lavin’s cutting one-liners as Sybil. Sadly, after her death in late 2024, the final two episodes had to continue without her.
Pamela Adlon joins as Bunny’s recently divorced sister, Mindy. While she brings talent, the show loses some spark without Lavin.

Why You Should Watch
This Ryan Murphy-produced series won’t change TV forever, but it doesn’t try to. Instead, it offers genuine laughs, a fresh look at friendships in the golden years, and some fantastic guest appearances.

Mid-Century Modern feels like comfort food for the soul. It might not break new ground, but it serves up what many viewers want: good company, sharp jokes, and a warm feeling that stays with you after the credits roll.
