“Family bonds break barriers in football,” says Premier League keeper Aaron Ramsdale in an insightful article featured on Outsports written by Jon Holmes. The Southampton and England goalkeeper shares how his brother Oliver’s coming out shaped his strong support for inclusion in football.

At 26, Ramsdale brings a personal touch to the Rainbow Laces campaign, which kicks off its yearly activation in the Premier League this Friday. Currently nursing a finger injury, he took time to film a meaningful video for the cause.

Oliver Ramsdale, Aaron’s middle brother, shared his truth with the family before starting drama school. Now, he’s built an impressive career in London’s West End and international theatre. The brothers, seven years apart in age, maintain a strong bond that transcends their different professional paths.

Speaking Up Against Online Hate

“The online comments and what my brother faces – that’s why I speak up,” Ramsdale states in the Premier League’s Untold series. He first mentioned Oliver’s story in The Players Tribune (August 2023), addressing social media abuse and trolling.

“Having a brother who’s come out doesn’t make me the only one who should speak up,” Ramsdale notes. He compares his professional challenges with his brother’s experience: “I face criticism and supporter reactions – it’s part of the job. But I never had to hide who I am or feel left out.”

A Call for Change

The Southampton keeper reflects on Oliver’s journey: “The challenges my brother faced, hiding parts of himself from family and others – that’s incredibly tough.” His words highlight the importance of acceptance and understanding in football and beyond.
