“He’s Gay!” – How Anthony Bowens Created AEW’s Most Memorable Pride Moment

Anthony Bowens, the first openly LGBTQIA+ AEW champion, shared the story behind one of wrestling’s most affirming moments in June 2023. During a recent ROAR Around The Ring podcast episode, Bowens spoke about the unforgettable crowd reaction that made history.

The Crowd Just Took Ove

The special moment happened when TV reporter Harley Cameron tried to flirt with Bowens in the ring. When she claimed he was attracted to her, Bowens responded with his characteristic wit, asking if she had been “kicked in the head too many times by a kangaroo.”

What happened next was pure magic. The entire arena burst into a supportive chant of “He’s gay!” The response was so strong that it lasted much longer than the 30 seconds shown on TV.

Behind The Scenes

“I wanted it to be organic. I wanted it to be fun,” Bowens told Fightful.com. He admitted he expected a mild reaction, but instead got the entire arena on their feet.

The moment meant even more because it wasn’t scripted. While wrestling matches follow a plan, crowd reactions are always real. Bowens also praised Harley Cameron’s performance, calling her “extremely talented and super funny.”

“If you told me years ago I’d have an arena chanting ‘HE’S GAY’ at me in the most positive ways, I’d say you’re crazy,” Bowens shared on social media after the event.

This moment shows how professional wrestling continues to change. As the first openly LGBTQIA+ AEW champion, Bowens breaks down barriers every time he steps into the ring. His success proves that talent and authenticity win fans over, no matter who you are.
