“We wanted to make it as touching and real as possible” – Daniel Craig on filming sex scenes with co-star Drew Starkey

After bidding farewell to his iconic role as James Bond, Daniel Craig is back on the big screen with a daring new project. In Queer, directed by Luca Guadagnino, the 55-year-old actor plays William Lee, a gay man in 1940s Mexico who becomes infatuated with a young drug user, portrayed by rising star Drew Starkey.

Speaking at the Venice Film Festival (via Variety), where the film premiered this week, Craig opened up about the challenges of shooting intimate scenes with his 29-year-old co-star.

“As you know, there’s nothing comfortable about filming a sex scene on set,” he said. “But Drew is a fantastic actor, and we tried to make the best of it, to keep things natural and even have a laugh.”

From 007 to Queer Icon

For Craig, taking on this role was a no-brainer. “If I wasn’t in this movie and saw it, I’d want to be in it,” he said. “It’s the kind of film I want to see and make.” The actor, who recently reprised his role as detective Benoit Blanc in Glass Onion, is no stranger to taking on diverse and challenging parts.

A Director’s Dream Come True

Guadagnino, fresh from the success of his tennis drama Challengers, had nothing but praise for his leading man. “Daniel is honestly one of the great actors of his generation,” the director gushed. “He’s subtle, profound, and beautifully universal. When he said he was up for anything this role required, I felt like the luckiest guy in the world.”

A Somber Look at Love and Loss

Based on the novel by William S. Burroughs, Queer promises to be a poignant exploration of addiction, love, and loss. The 135-minute drama has already been picked up by A24 for distribution, though a release date has yet to be announced.

As audiences eagerly await the chance to see Craig in this groundbreaking role, one thing is clear: the actor’s commitment to authenticity and vulnerability on screen is as strong as ever. “He allows his fragility to be seen,” Guadagnino said of his star. “That’s what makes him truly iconic.”
