The National Football League (NFL) has made a significant play for LGBTQIA+ youth. On National Coming Out Day, the league donated $100,000 to The Trevor Project. This charity focuses on preventing self-harm among LGBTQIA+ young people.

Carl Nassib Backstory

“A huge, huge thank you to the NFL,” said Carl Nassib, a gay former NFL player. He announced this donation on NFL Network. “It’s really positive stuff.”

Nassib came out as gay in 2021. At that time, he donated $100,000 to The Trevor Project. The NFL matched his donation. Nassib played for Cleveland, Tampa Bay, and Las Vegas before retiring in 2023.

“When I came out in 2021, it was important to me to let LGBTQIA+ young people know they are not alone,” Nassib said. He’s been a strong supporter of The Trevor Project since coming out.

Jaymes Black, chief executive of The Trevor Project, spoke about the importance of safe spaces in sports. The charity’s research found that 68% of LGBTQIA+ young people never participated in sports. Many feared discrimination from peers and coaches.

“Now, more than ever, it’s crucial for coaches, athletic directors, and teammates to create safe and affirming spaces for LGBTQIA+ athletes,” Black said.

NFL’s Commitment to Inclusion

Jonathan Beane, the NFL’s senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer, expressed the league’s dedication to working with The Trevor Project. “We are thrilled that The Trevor Project will continue to be a partner in our shared commitment to an LGBTQIA+ inclusive league and world,” he said.

This donation shows the NFL’s ongoing support for LGBTQIA+ inclusion. It’s a step towards creating a more accepting environment in sports.
