Every day we live we are getting closer to our death.”
Born Milton Teagle Simmons in New Orleans on July 12, 1948, he adopted the name Richard while growing up. Simmons often spoke about his struggles with weight as a child, which inspired his weight loss journey and pursuit of a career in fitness starting in the 1970s.
His first venture was opening his gym, Slimmons, in Beverly Hills, California. In 1980, he released his first book, Never Say Diet, which was followed by 11 more over his career.

Simmons rose to fame in the 1980s with his wildly popular fitness videos, including the Sweatin’ To The Oldies series, which coincided with the nationwide aerobics and jazzercise craze. He also made frequent appearances on talk shows like The Late Show With David Letterman and The Rosie O’Donnell Show, and had roles on General Hospital and Arrested Development.
From 1980 to 1984, Simmons hosted his own Emmy-winning talk and fitness show, The Richard Simmons Show.
Despite stepping back from the public eye in recent years, Simmons remained active on social media, sharing messages of positivity and encouragement with his fans. In one of his final posts on Facebook, he expressed gratitude for the birthday wishes he received, writing, “Thank you… I never got so many messages about my birthday in my life!”
