Track Star Trey Cunningham Comes Out, Inspiring LGBTQIA+ Athletes
Trey Cunningham, the 25-year-old American track star, recently came out as gay in an interview with The New York Times. He said coming out to his family privately five years ago was the scariest thing he’s ever done. Now, he’s sharing his truth with the world.
Growing up in conservative rural Alabama, Cunningham didn’t explore his sexuality until college. He called his hometown, “the sort of place where you did not want to be the gay kid at school.” But he eventually realised that people just don’t care. “I’m just Trey, and apparently it’s a special thing that I like to kiss guys,” he told US Weekly.
“There are lots of people who are in this weird space. They’re not out. But it is kind of understood.”
Cunningham feels lucky to be surrounded by supportive people, but he knows that’s not the case for all male athletes. He hopes his coming out will inspire others who may not feel as comfortable being open about their sexuality.
As a world-class hurdler, Cunningham’s career could take him to places where homosexuality is criminalised. He’ll have to consult his management before traveling to certain countries. But he’s not letting that stop him from being true to himself.
In a triumphant moment, Cunningham won his first race after coming out publicly. His victory not only showcased his incredible athletic abilities but also demonstrated that being true to oneself can lead to success in all aspects of life.
