Did Matt Bomer Lose Superman Role Because He’s Gay?
According to a recent article by Instinct, Matt Bomer has revealed that he may have lost out on playing Superman in the early 2000s due to being outed as gay. The 46-year-old star, known for his roles in Magic Mike, American Horror Story, White Collar, and this year’s gay favourite, Fellow Traveler, shared his experience during a red-carpet interview at the Chatter Awards Podcast.
Bomer recounted a month-long audition process for Superman: Flyby, a project written by JJ Abrams that ultimately never came to fruition. “I went in on a cattle call for Superman, and then it turned into a one-month audition experience where I was auditioning again and again and again. It looked like I was the director’s choice for the role,” Bomer explained, as reported by Instinct.
When asked if he believed his dismissal was due to being outed, Bomer responded, “Yeah, that’s my understanding. That was a time in the industry when something like that could still really be weaponized against you. How, and why, and who, I don’t know, but yeah, that’s my understanding.”
Despite missing out on the Superman role, Bomer’s career has thrived. He went on to win a Critic’s Choice Award, a Golden Globe, and a People’s Choice Award for his performances in various films and television shows.
Bomer eventually did get to play Clark Kent, albeit in a different medium. He voiced the iconic character in the 2013 animated film Superman: Unbound.
