Darren Criss, known for his portrayal of Blaine Anderson in the hit series Glee, recently shared his thoughts on his connection to the LGBTQIA+ community during a panel at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo on April 28. Finding Inspiration in Queer Communities

Darren openly admitted, “I have been so culturally queer my whole life.” He explained that the people he idolized and drew inspiration from were often part of queer communities. Growing up in San Francisco in the ’90s, Criss witnessed the struggles and experiences of the gay community firsthand, making it a familiar concept to him.

As a straight actor, Criss recognized the importance of his role in Glee and the beloved relationship between his character Blaine and Kurt (played by Chris Colfer). He expressed his gladness in being the one to portray this relationship, understanding the impact it had on fans who felt represented and understood through the show.

He emphasized the value of representing any kind of underdog, be it sexual, religious, or ethnic, as it provides context and understanding to those who may not have had it before. He acknowledged the significance of his role in affecting people’s lives through the show and the relationship he portrayed.

Gratitude and Appreciation

Throughout the panel, Criss conveyed his gratitude towards the LGBTQIA+ community for the inspiration and influence they have had on his life. He recognized the importance of the queer community in shaping his personal and professional journey, and expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to represent a meaningful narrative in Glee.
