“9-1-1” Star Oliver Stark Couldn’t Care Less About The Bigots Who Hate His Character
Oliver Stark isn’t mincing words when it comes to responding to backlash over his character’s first gay kiss on 9-1-1. On the series, Stark plays Buck, who has been exploring his bisexuality.
Buck experienced a significant moment on the show with his first same-sex kiss. While many viewers celebrated the inclusion, there were inevitably some negative reactions.
The only right way to respond to homophobes
In response to the backlash, Stark took to social media to address the critics head-on. He expressed gratitude for the overwhelming positive response to Buck’s storyline and emphasised the show’s commitment to love and inclusion from the very beginning.
Stark made it clear that he has little patience for those who can’t embrace the diversity portrayed on the show, stating, “I truly don’t care” about their negative comments. He reminded detractors that 9-1-1 has always featured queer relationships and that Buck’s exploration of his bisexuality is in line with the show’s themes of love and acceptance.
He ended his statement by suggesting that those who can’t accept this aspect of the show are missing its entire point and are free to stop watching if they choose.
“I would like you to know that I truly don’t care,” he says. “I fear you’ve missed the entire point of the show. You are not required to announce your departure.” Slayed.
Despite the controversy, fans are eagerly speculating about the possibility of further exploring Buck’s bisexuality. While the direction of his relationship remains uncertain, LGBTQIA+ viewers are ready to support wherever the series takes this character.
New episodes of 9-1-1 season 7 premiere every Thursday on ABC.
