Can All “Heartbreak High” Fans Please Report To The Office… Season 2 Is Coming To Pick You Up
Netflix’s Heartbreak High revival was a breath of fresh air. The iconic ’90s series showcased Australian teens and their high school dramas in an honest light – the new generation remained true to the original in that sense, with a diverse cast of characters, experiences and identities.
Thanks to the success of the first season, Netflix has confirmed the Emmy Award-winning show has been renewed for season two with the official release date being April 11.
SLUTS is back in session
Our introduction to the students at Hartley High focussed around Amerie (played by Ayesha Madon) and her immediate circle of friends. Following her mysterious falling out with best friend Harper (Asher Yasbincek), and the discovery of their “incest map” by the school, Amerie attempts to repair her reputation while being forced to undergo specialised sex education with her peers.
The central cast includes Chloe Hayden, Thomas Weatherall, Josh Heuston, Will McDonald, James Majoos, Brodie Townsend, Bryn Chapman Parish, Gemma Chua-Tran and Sherry-Lee Watson. Of this central cast, a whopping eight of their characters identify as LGBTQIA+ and seven characters are BIPOC.
Some shows attempt to tick a number of diversity boxes in their casting but it reads as inauthentic to viewers. Heartbreak High is not one of those. Australia is known for its multiculturalism and Gen Z is known for its growing LGBTQIA+ numbers. The writing in the show feels authentic to a young base, which also aids in its success.
Doin’ it for the plot (SPOILER ALERT)
So, what will the plots for season two entail? Netflix has released an official synopsis teasing a few of the main points:
“All our heroes are back for Term Two at the ‘lowest ranking school in the district’. But fresh hotties, a new sports teacher and a mystery assailant throw any hopes for a peaceful term into disarray, while the race for school captain is seeing dirty tactics run rife through Hartley High. Yep… It’s Term Two bitches, and it’s more chaotic than ever.”
We can glean a few other things from where we left our characters in the end of the last season. Amerie has repaired her friendship with Harper after she learned about the trauma she experienced from her father and the eshays. Malakai is still healing after he experienced police brutality. Darren and Cash finally admitted their love for each other before Cash was arrested. Quinni ended her toxic relationship with Sasha after feeling infantilised for her autism. Amerie and Harper broke things off with Dusty after finding out it was his idea to frame Miss Jojo for sexual assault.
With all that in mind, the season will dive into these characters’ lives more and introduce us to two new characters. Sam Rechner will play Rowan Callaghan – a sweet unassuming country boy who will find himself in a classic Hartley High love triangle. Kartanya Maynard will play Zoe Clark – a celibacy advocate who will be attempting to take down the SLT class from within.
