What We Know About The Upcoming “Mary And George” Series
Nicholas Galitzine (Prince Henry in Red, White And Royal Blue) returns to our screens alongside Julianne Moore in a gripping new historical drama called Mary And George. It follows the true story of Mary Villiers, Countess Of Buckingham, and her son George, who history remembers as being the paramour (red hot lover) of King James I.
This new drama promises ample steamy scenes of royal sex and homosexual scandal; what more could you want from a show?
And they were roommates…
Galitzine has appeared in three roles as royalty; we’ve seen him as Prince Robert in Cinderella, Prince Henry in Red, White And Royal Blue and he will be a Duke in the upcoming Mary And George. Two of the three roles are gay characters so we know he can deliver the goods.
History remembers Mary Villiers to be a shrewd, Lady Macbeth figure who groomed her son George to seduce the King Of England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland. King James is considered the first monarch to rule all four kingdoms and also the first openly gay sovereign in UK history.
Historians note that King James’ popularity was not popular among his people owing to his Scottish heritage and overt appointment of court favourites. George Villiers was one such favourite whose meteoric rise denotes the tenor of controversy in James’ reign. It was no secret at court that the king favoured men and would often gift titles and power to those closest to him; Mary And George dramatises Mary’s manipulation of this court atmosphere for her benefit through her son.
The trailer for this series drops hints at the kind of narrative; Mary’s ambitious rise to power and her son’s use of sexuality to seduce King James.
Over seven episodes, we will get an inside look at the work these two courtiers performed to rise in power. There will be plenty of man-on-man action and political intrigue along the way and trailers indicate the series will be premiering in Spring of 2024. Mary And George will be available to stream via AMC+ and on the AMC Network.
