Jude York first popped up on our gaydar as a Eurovision hopeful when he performed I Won’t Need To Dream on Australia Decides in 2022. Since then, he’s grown his following from about 20,000 to half a million and toured Europe with Dean Lewis.

Jude’s latest release, out today, is a banger called Cheerleaders And Jocks .

“With Your 2.5 Kids Conceived In Parking Lots…”

Jude created Cheerleaders And Jocks as an homage to queerness, lightly poking fun at heteronormativity. The song unpacks the dichotomy between the popular norms of Western culture and the abjectness of the Other. What makes it great, though, is its ability to remain fun. It’s a bop!

With a funky recurring bass punctuated with softer instrumentals and Jude’s signature tenor vocals, the song flows with a sense of purposeful direction and thoughtful pacing. Where the fun really lies is in the lyrics.

I’ll never be your white picket fence
I don’t want your all-American
Your cheerleaders and jocks, can you connect the dots?
With your 2.5 kids conceived in parking lots

Apparently, this is Jude’s way of talking about a recent breakup. He tells DNA he can’t abide living a regular life and is happy rebelling against the norms. “I wrote Cheerleaders And Jocks in response to being rejected by somebody who wanted a more ‘conventional’ life,” he says.

“I realised that I would never want to conform to those white-picket-fence ideals anyway, and that I’m better off without him! Ultimately, I just want everyone to feel like they can be their most honest, whacky, weird selves when they listen to this.”

As important as this story is to tell, Cheerleaders And Jocks is funny and catchy and quintessential pop. The video also shows Jude’s light-heartedness as he stumbles through various costume changes. From the classic jock, letterman jacket and all, to a nerd donning thick-framed, taped glasses and a math textbook, Jude plays with the archetypes that are baked into our consciousness.

If you’re looking for something fun, pop-y and fresh, we recommend Cheerleaders And Jocks.
