Dr Joseph Brennan knows gay sex. With a PhD from the University of Sydney and his works about gay pornography published by Oxford University Press, who better to debut a gripping novel about homoerotic sexual awakenings on the high seas?

Loose Lips is a gay erotic novel set on a World War II troopship heading for battle. Stowaway Olli Turner grew up in the shadow of the RMS Queen Elizabeth’s construction, his sexual awakening happening in the years preceding the war. When time comes for the RMS Queen Elizabeth to set sail, Olli is on-board preparing for an adventure that will turn out to be far more tumultuous than he ever could have expected.

Among the hungry, ambitious young seamen aboard, Olli will traverse wartime tensions in a ferocious blend of adventure, queer passion and intrigue.

Joseph has written articles for DNA about gay pornography and his style of prose and sense of insight lend expertise to the raunchier sex scenes in the novel. Publishers Weekly, the biggest name in book reviews, believe Loose Lips is a triumph.

Their review says: “Brennan’s erotic debut, a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award, is a salacious story of a young man swept into service at sea during WWII. … The period details and connection to historic boat sinkings are intriguing, and Brennan’s idiosyncratic prose is fascinatingly textured … The sex scenes themselves are graphic and kinky.”

For a debut novel, Loose Lips is already causing waves in the literary community being nominated for a Lammy and receiving critical praise for Joseph’s writing style.
