Is Someone Cutting Onions Or Did We Just Watch Cub Sport’s New Video?

Cub Sport are an Australian indie band based out of Brisbane. Their latest album Jesus At The Gay Bar reached the top of Australia’s charts and they have just completed a tour of the USA. But it’s more than just their musical journey that we’re interested in.

A new TikTok posted by lead singer Tim Nelson chronicles the truly fairytale romance between himself and fellow bandmate Sam Netterfield, his husband.

I TOLD YOU I’M NOT CRYING! (I am, in fact, definitely crying)

Lead vocalist Tim and keyboardist Sam are the band’s power couple. In live shows performing together, they’re often seen stealing glances at each other and reaching out for one another. Cub Sport got their big break when they went on tour and opened for The 1975 in 2016, the same year their debut album This Is Our Vice was released, reports The Music.

Nelson credits this time with The 1975 as being the first where he stopped hiding from people. “I came out just before we played those shows, and it was the first time I’d ever sung on a mic without playing guitar or keyboard. I think I’ve always been so scared of showing myself to people,” he says.

In the video Tim posted on TikTok, he talks about his journey with Cub Sport and about how three-quarters of the band are queer. The video takes a heart-wrenching turn when he begins telling us about his relationship with Sam.

The two became close friends in high school and over the years fell in love in secret. When they finally gathered the courage to admit it to each other they began dating in secret. As the band grew in success, the two lovers found the strength to come out. They got married in 2018 and are going strong to this day.

“Our relationship was very secret, and I definitely held a lot of shame around that. It was like this perfect little world, just for the two of us. But the idea of anyone else finding out about it was my worst nightmare,” says Tim. The enormity of finding love in the shadows and holding on to that closeness into adulthood isn’t lost on him. “Oh my god, we’re soulmates. I didn’t even understand it at the time; I’ve gone back and tapped into things I avoided talking about. I feel like I’m finally shedding light and celebrating the beauty of that time.”
