Serving Slay At The VMAs – Queer Celebs On The Red Carpet

On Sunday, August 28, the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) were held in New Jersey where celebrities and industry folks gathered to honour the titans of pop culture and entertainment. This year, the event was attended by numerous LGBTQIA+ stars – some slayed and others… well… it’s nice to see they tried!

THE OUTFITS OF THE STARS

Compiling a list of the queer celebrities in attendance, Out Magazine showcases the very best (and the very mediocre) outfits on display. It’s easy to sit behind a screen and pass judgement from a position of anonymity, so it must first be noted that all these celebrities are iconic regardless of how they dress on this one occasion. With that said, let’s get into it.

Bob The Drag Queen

If there’s one thing you can expect from a drag queen, let alone one of Bob’s calibre, it’s that they’re going to stunt on a red carpet. Opting for a Mindy Lamour styled outfit, Bob The Drag Queen dons a three-piece look with a muted navy tartan pattern on the vest and jacket. Underneath, Bob wears a white shirt-dress with gold accessories to tie everything together. This is a serve.

Billy Eichner

We love comedian, actor and writer Billy Eichner. His new film Bros is reportedly hilarious as are the projects he has been on previously. Now, that said, this outfit gives us little to recount. He’s wearing an all-black outfit with a mesh top, black pants and Chelsea boots. It’s giving very much straight ally at the gay club for the first time.

Colton Haynes

Colton has come strides in his career from his early modelling days and he’s retained his leading man good-looks. He wears a pastel lime-green Dior suit with platform chunky shoes. It’s a great look on Colton and the ’70s flare bottoms are interesting, they’d have been perfect if tailored to his dimensions more.

Lil Nas X

It really shouldn’t be fair that one person gets to be talented, hot, funny and stylish. And yet, Lil Nas X exists so we definitely know it’s possible. Never one to shy away from a bold look, Nas wears a Harris Reed design donned in feathers and sequins. For such a campy look, Nas still manages to appear sleek and put together. The silhouette harkens the likeness of Iman who wore a similar design at the Met Gala. This is the slay of the night.

Monét X Change

Monét has never been known for being exclusively a “look” queen but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t eat when it comes to a red carpet. This Joshuan Aponte Design was custom made for Monét and is a floral moment that gives a childlike youth to her appearance. Again, Monét X Change is not known for her looks, but this is fun and fresh and a pass.

Saucy Santana

Saucy Santana is a queen and deserves recognition for his talent and success. This material girl wears a floor-length, off-white sequin coat lined with feathers with a pop of pink on the lining. This is a beautiful gown but doesn’t give much to rave about. Nonetheless, it’s a serve.
