After a sold out debut at last year’s Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival, Australia’s biggest vogue ball is taking over Sydney’s iconic Carriageworks space again in 2019.

The former section of the Eveleigh rail yards was converted into an arts hub, performance space and festival venue by the NSW Government in 2007 and Sissy Ball will transform the space this Mardi Gras on February 23 from 5pm.

Curated by multidisciplinary artist and House of Slé mother Bhenji Ra, Sissy Ball promises an over the top and dazzling celebration of self-expression and identity.

This year’s event is presented in collaboration with Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and Red Bull Music and will be one of the highlights of this year’s festival season.

Inspired by New York’s iconic vogue ballroom scene that began in the 1960s and was popularised by the Madonna song of the same name in 1990, entrants will take centre stage as they battle for the judges’ attention and the prestigious Sissy Ball category titles; awarded for dance, movement, fashion, and flair.

Categories include hand performance, face, female figure, sex siren, runway and vogue femme. Rounding out the entertainment on the night will be live music, DJs and performing artists including Mikeq (USA), Byrell the Great (USA), Jesswar, Precious (USA), Leiomy Maldonado (USA), Dashaun Wesley (USA), House of Slé, House of Luna, House of Iman Tamatoa and many more.

Carriageworks is only a short walk from both Redfern train station and Macdonaldtown train station if you are coming by public transport.
